What is Forehead Reduction?

Forehead reduction, also known as hairline lowering surgery, shortens the height of the forehead by advancing the hairline forward. By carefully repositioning the scalp, the procedure creates better harmony between your features and improves overall facial balance.

Every treatment is designed around your individual hairline, facial structure and goals to achieve a result that looks and feels entirely natural.

The Procedure

Your surgeon assesses your hairline, scalp mobility and facial proportions, then maps out a realistic new hairline position designed to look completely natural and balanced.

A fine incision is created along the front of your natural hairline so that any resulting scar is concealed within the hair as it grows.

The scalp is gently released and advanced forward to reduce forehead height, with a measured amount of upper forehead skin removed.

The advanced scalp is secured with sutures, and in some cases small fixation devices, to hold the new hairline firmly and reliably in place.

The incision is carefully closed with fine sutures to promote neat healing and minimise scarring. The procedure usually takes around 2 to 3 hours depending on your individual plan.

Note: Final suitability is always confirmed during your consultation

The distance the hairline can be brought forward depends on your scalp laxity, facial proportions and hair density. Your surgeon will assess how mobile your scalp is and recommend a realistic new position that improves balance while respecting your natural anatomy.

Yes. Forehead reduction is frequently combined with treatments such as a brow lift, hair transplant or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Combining procedures can improve overall facial harmony and may reduce total recovery time, provided you are a suitable candidate.

Scarring is generally minimal. The incision is positioned along the natural hairline, so once healed the scar is well hidden within the hair and continues to fade over time.

The procedure itself is not painful as it is performed under anaesthesia. Afterwards you may notice mild to moderate tightness, discomfort or swelling, which is well controlled with prescribed pain relief and usually improves within a few days.

Key considerations before surgery

Type of Anaesthesia

Forehead reduction surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthesia so that you remain fully comfortable throughout. In selected cases the approach may be adapted to your individual needs, and your surgeon and anaesthetist will confirm the most suitable option with you at your consultation.

Aftercare Requirements

Mild swelling, tightness and tenderness are normal in the first few days after forehead reduction surgery and ease steadily over the following weeks. You will be advised to keep your head elevated, avoid strenuous activity and care gently for the incision along the hairline. Clear written aftercare instructions and follow-up appointments are provided, and our team remains on hand to support you throughout your recovery.

Back to Work (Recovery)

Most patients notice some swelling and tightness in the early days, which settles gradually. Many feel comfortable returning to desk-based or light work within 10–14 days, depending on how they are healing. Your surgeon will advise when it is safe to resume more demanding activities based on your individual recovery.
