Hearing, Balance & Hearing Aids

How well you hear can also affect your balance as the ears work collaboratively with other systems in the body. The auditory and vestibular systems are found in the inner ear, and when one or both of these systems is damaged, it can affect hearing and balance at the same time.

What’s Involved

The use of a hearing aid is found to improve both clarity of sound, and your ability to stand upright without feeling nauseous or like you’re going to stumble or fall. At LPH we carry out a thorough hearing test to establish your level of hearing, and will recommend the use of hearing aid if this is necessary. These are small electronic devices that are worn in or behind the ear, and amplify the vibrations that convert into sound.

Wearing a hearing aid when hearing loss is detected can help to improve your balance as effective sound signals will keep you oriented within a space.

    Key Considerations

    Treatment Duration

If you require a hearing aid due to hearing loss, you are likely to need it for the rest of your life. Our examination appointments can take between 30 minutes and 1 hour, and will investigate the reasons for your hearing loss, as well as the severity of your condition.

    Aftercare Requirements

You will need to keep your hearing aid clean, and our consultants will give you instructions on how to do this. We will arrange a follow-up appointment after fitting your hearing aid to make sure you’re adjusting well. Your ENT consultant may require regular check-ups to monitor your condition.

    Back To Work (Recovery)

Whilst there is no specific downtime associated with having a hearing aid fitted, you may find it takes a few weeks to get used to wearing it. LPH is here to support you, should there be a need, and you can contact our team at any time.
