Intra-Ocular Lens Implants

Intra-ocular lens (IOL) implants, also known as refractive lens exchange, replace the eye's natural lens with a bespoke artificial lens to correct long-sightedness, short-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. It is an excellent option for reducing or removing the need for glasses and contact lenses.

What’s Involved

Intra-ocular lens implant surgery uses the same gentle, microsurgical technique as cataract surgery. Through a tiny self-sealing incision, your surgeon removes the eye's natural lens and replaces it with a precisely chosen artificial intra-ocular lens tailored to your individual prescription and the way you use your eyes day to day.

A range of premium lenses is available, including monofocal lenses that have a single focal point for sharp distance vision, trifocal lenses that enable near and distance vision when looking in any direction, and toric lenses that correct an astigmatism to improve overall vision. Because the natural lens is removed, patients who choose this treatment will never develop a cataract in that eye, making the results permanent and stable for life.

    Key Considerations

    Treatment Duration

Intra-ocular lens implant surgery is a precise day-case procedure that can take as little as 15 minutes per eye. Each eye is treated separately, and your surgeon will personalise the approach to your prescription, eye anatomy and visual goals.

    Type Of Anaesthesia

A local anaesthetic is used to perform this surgery, which is administered via eye drops. We often combine this with twilight sedation in cases where the patient is particularly anxious.

    Aftercare Requirements

Patients should avoid applying make-up and rubbing the eyes for up to 2 weeks. A few days may need to be taken off work, and eye drops will help to reduce the risk of infection and further complications.

    Back To Work (Recovery)

The eyes may take between 2 and 4 weeks to settle after surgery, and for the final results to develop fully. Typically, patients may need to consider a few days of downtime while side effects and tenderness improve.

    Treatment Cost

The cost of your treatment may depend on a number of factors. The below is a guide to pricing, and may be subject to change.

Starts at From £3750 per eye
